Mushy Asghar Opens New Inclusive Sanctuary Space at Franklin

Students and staff at Franklin Sixth Form College, welcomed Musharaf Asghar, known for his appearance on Educating Yorkshire 13 years ago, for a morning of inspiration and celebration.

Mushy delivered two powerful talks, sharing his personal journey and speaking honestly about determination, overcoming adversity, and his experiences with a speech impediment. During his visit, he also officially launched Franklin’s new Sanctury space, which was partially funded by the NE Lincs High Needs Capital Grant.

His story resonated with students, sharing his own adversities and challenges, encouraging them to build confidence and believe in themselves.

Following his talks, Mushy officially opened The Sanctuary, a dedicated space for students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). The opening was attended by governors, local partners, and students who will benefit from the space, which has been created as a calm, inclusive environment where students can spend time with friends, focus on independent study, and develop their confidence and independence.

Mushy said: “It’s so important having these environments in schools and colleges. In my school days, we didn’t have these as such. I think creating an environment where young students can visit, spend time with friends, and learn from each other is a must.

“Just spending the morning at Franklin, I can see how inclusive it is and what a great environment it is. It was lovely that, moments later I was cutting the ribbon to such a beautiful space.”

Vicki Jones, Associate Principal – Inclusion and Wellbeing, said: “The Sanctuary gives our Team Inclusion the opportunity to deliver key working sessions and supports independent study in a structured and reassuring environment.

“Importantly, it also includes a breakout space for emotional regulation — somewhere students can take time out, reset, and feel safe. The shared kitchen area encourages independence, allowing students to prepare food and drinks, while also creating opportunities to build life skills. In addition, this space is home to our Team Thrive wellbeing offices and serves as a base for our Inclusion staff, ensuring support is always close by.

“At its core, The Sanctuary is an inclusive environment for our SEND and EHCP learners, a place where they can build friendships, develop confidence, complete their studies, and feel a true sense of belonging within college life.”

The new space is part of Franklin’s ongoing commitment to creating a supportive and inclusive environment where every student feels safe, valued, and able to thrive.
